People walking past a loaded wagon don’t always clock what’s behind it. The trees, the chip, the timber heading off to mills and yards across the country – it’s easy to think of woodland as just nice scenery. But the numbers tell a different story, and it’s a story worth telling.
According to the Office for National Statistics, the UK’s forests generated £515 million from timber and wood fuel in 2022, with around £126 million of that in England alone. That’s not a hobby. That’s a proper industry keeping people in work right across rural Britain – from the lads doing the felling and clearance to the drivers, the chip producers and everyone in between.
More Than Just Logs on a Truck
What makes forestry tick is that almost nothing goes to waste. A single felling job doesn’t just produce one product — it produces a whole chain of them, depending on the tree and the timber. The good straight stuff goes off for sawlogs and construction. Plenty more ends up as the everyday timber you see everywhere without thinking about it:
- Fencing – keeping fields, gardens and yards boxed in up and down the country
- Pallets – the unsung heroes of just about every supply chain going
- Landscaping timber – sleepers, edging, the lot
- Wood fuels and biomass – chip, pellets and briquettes putting the smaller wood and residues to good use
That last one matters. The bits that used to get burned on site or left to rot now go into proper fuel that heats homes, farms and businesses. Brash, thinnings, off-cuts — material that’s no good for timber still has a job to do. Waste not.
Why Managed Woodland Pays Off
Here’s the thing the figures don’t shout about: a lot of UK woodland is sat there under-managed or not managed at all. That’s a missed opportunity, and not just a financial one. Woods that get left alone tend to slide in condition — they’re more prone to disease, less resilient, and the timber growing in them ends up worth a lot less.
A bit of management changes all that. Thinning, clearance and proper planning keep trees healthy, let the best stems grow on, and turn a quiet patch of woodland into something that actually earns its keep. Tidy woods now means decent stock and decent income down the line. It’s the difference between a woodland that costs you money and one that pays you back.
A Working Landscape
The point of all this isn’t to slap a price tag on the countryside. It’s to remember that our woodlands are working landscapes — places where timber, fuel, wildlife and jobs all sit side by side. None of it has to be a trade-off. Manage the woods well and you get the lot: healthy trees, good fuel, useful timber and rural folk in steady work.
